If that was the case, Gollum's story would be even more tragic because, in The Two Towers, it was clear that he could have been saved. Some fans believe that Eru Ilúvatar actually pushed Gollum into the fire and might have influenced his choices to ensure that the Ring was destroyed. Unfortunately, though, he ended up succumbing to the Ring's hold over him, bit Frodo's finger off and tripped into the Cracks of Doom. Tolkien thought that Gollum could have been saved.
It proved that, if things had gone differently, he might have been saved from the Ring's hold over him. Thus, the scene expertly showed the potential in Gollum. If Gollum had been in control, he would have let Frodo drown, killed Sam and taken the Precious as his own. It took Frodo by surprise, but it showed that Gollum's Smeagol personality wasn't completely gone. Just before he could be enveloped, Gollum reached in and saved him. Seeing that, Frodo fell into the marsh and was surrounded by the green spirits of the dead.
While the book scene played out a bit differently, the movie version was straight-up scary because one of the dead bodies opened his eyes. The two personalities would literally argue with each other as Gollum's better half tried to resist the damnable influence of the One Ring. Gollum was the half of his mind that the Ring had corrupted, while Smeagol represented everything that remained from his previous life. The Ring had driven him mad and split him into two competing personalities: Gollum and Smeagol. There, he stayed for centuries until Bilbo showed up during the events of The Hobbit.ĭuring Bilbo's visit, fans realized that Gollum wasn't completely sane. So, Smeagol killed his cousin in a fit of rage and took the One Ring as his own, calling it his "Precious." The Ring afforded Smeagol a long life, but he lived it alone, under a mountain. Smeagol was enamored with it, but Deagol wouldn't let him have hit. One day, he and his cousin Deagol stumbled upon Sauron's One Ring. Gollum wasn't always a miserable being who wandered around mumbling about his "Precious." Once upon a time, he was a Hobbit-like creature named Smeagol.
